Saint Norbert, bishop, who, austere in his manner of life and wholly devoted to union with God and the preaching of the Gospel, founded near Laon in Gaul the Order of Canons Regular of Prémontré (the Premonstratensians) and, having become an outstanding shepherd at Magdeburg in Saxony, reformed Christian life and strove to spread the faith among the neighboring peoples.
