The Memorial of Saint John, bishop of Constantinople and Doctor of the Church, who, an Antiochene by birth and ordained to the priesthood, earned by his golden eloquence the surname Chrysostom. Elected to that see, he showed himself an excellent pastor and teacher of the faith, but was cast into exile by his enemies; when by the decree of Pope Saint Innocent I he was being recalled, on the journey, having endured many sufferings at the hands of the soldiers guarding him, he gave up his soul to God on the fourteenth day of September, at Comana in Pontus.
