At the monastery of Ely in East Anglia, Saint Etheldreda, abbess, who, the daughter of a king and herself queen of Northumbria, having twice set aside marriage, received the veil of a nun from the holy bishop Wilfrid in the monastery she herself had founded, over which she presided as mother by her example and counsels to a great number of virgins.
