At Wearmouth in Northumbria, Saint Benedict Biscop, abbot, who, having journeyed to Rome five times as a pilgrim, brought back with him to his homeland many teachers and many books, so that the monks gathered within the enclosure of the monastery under the Rule of Saint Benedict might, by the increase of their learning, truly win for the Church the surpassing love of Christ.
