Saint Benedict, Abbot

The memorial of Saint Benedict, abbot, who, born at Nursia in Umbria and educated at Rome, began the eremitical life in the region of Subiaco, gathering many disciples around himself. He then betook himself to Monte Cassino, where he founded a celebrated monastery and composed the Rule which so spread through all regions that he came to merit the title of patriarch of monks in the West. He is said to have died on the twenty-first day of March.

emória sancti Benedícti, abbátis, qui, Nürsize in Umbria IVI natus et Romz educátus, vitam eremiticam inchoávit in regióne Sublacénsi, multos discípulos circa se cóngregans, deínde Casínum se cóntulit, ubi célebre cóndidit monastérium et Régulam compósuit, qua per omnes regiónes sic pervásit, ut ipse appellári mererétur patriárcha monachórum 1n Occidénte. Obiíisse tráditur die vigésima prima mártii.
