At anchor on the open sea off Rochefort on the coast of France, Blessed Augustine Joseph (Élie) Desgardin, monk of the Cistercian Order and martyr, who, in the time of the French Revolution, was carried off from the monastery of Sept-Fons in hatred of religion and, cast into a squalid ship, was seized by disease and died while caring for his sick fellow-captives.
