Saint Anthony of Padua

Saint · Common of Doctors of the Church · Padua, Italy · d. 1231

The memorial of Saint Anthony, priest and Doctor of the Church. A Portuguese by birth and already a canon regular, he entered the newly founded Order of Friars Minor in order to devote himself to spreading the faith among the peoples of Africa. Carrying out the office of preaching with great fruit in Italy and France, he drew many to true doctrine. He wrote sermons steeped in learning and sweetness, and by the mandate of Saint Francis he taught theology to the friars, until at Padua he passed to the Lord.
