The memorial of Saint Anthony, abbot, who, having lost his parents and taking to heart the precepts of the Gospel, distributed all his goods to the poor and withdrew into solitude in the Thebaid in Egypt, where he began to lead an ascetic life. He devoted his efforts to strengthening the Church, sustaining the confessors of the faith during the persecution of the emperor Diocletian, and stood by Saint Athanasius against the Arians. So many were his disciples that he was called the father of monks.
