Memorial of Saint Gregory the Great, pope and doctor of the Church, who, having taken up the monastic life, fulfilled the office of legate at Constantinople and, at length elected on this day to the Roman See, both set in order earthly affairs and, as servant of the servants of God, cared for sacred things. He showed himself a true pastor in the governing of affairs, in relieving the needy in every way, in fostering the monastic life, and in strengthening and spreading the faith everywhere; wherefore he also wrote excellently on many matters of morals and of pastoral care. He died on the twelfth day of March.
On this day are also commemorated the Martyrs of Paris of the September Massacres: Peter Gauguin, Peter Michael Guérin, James Stephen Philip Hourrier, Henry Augustus Luzeau de la Mulonnière, John Baptist Michael Pontus, Peter Nicholas Psalmon, and Claude Rousseau, of the Society of Saint-Sulpice; Charles Jeremiah Bérauld du Pérou, Francis Louis Hébert, and Francis Lefranc, of the Society of Jesus and Mary; Urban Lefèvre, of the Paris Society of Foreign Missions; Severinus (George) Girauld, of the Third Order Regular of Saint Francis, all priests; Louis Alexis Matthias Boubert, Stephen Francis Deusdedit de Ravinel, and James Augustine Robert de Lézardières, deacons; Salomon (William Nicholas Louis) Leclercq, religious of the Christian Schools; Augustus Nézel, cleric; and Charles Régis Matthieu de la Calmette.
