At Bourges in Aquitaine, Saint William, bishop, who, burning with desire for solitude and meditation, became a Cistercian monk of Pontigny and then abbot of Chaalis, and at last being set over the Church of Bourges, never relaxed the austerity of the monastic life, and was renowned for his charity toward the clergy, captives, and the poor.
